While it's probable that this design choice was meant to allow for greater accessibility options given the trend toward such in the greater gaming industry, this still immediately led to joke comments about SEGA (or more specifically, Takashi Iizuka himself) finally getting fed up with listening to complaints about Sonic's 3D controls and physics for every new game, and deciding to let individual players work on said controls and physics themselves. "Fine! You want good controls? Then do it yourself if you're so smart!" Explanation One of the hands-on impressions has revealed that the game will have no less than twelve sets of customizable gameplay sliders that let you set Sonic's controls (speed, turning, acceleration, etc.) to how you like.In fact, some had to point out that that is how seagulls tend to be. Already agitated with the first trailer's unrefined animations, fans attacked it as another sign of Segas supposed laziness. Explanation In the combat trailer released by IGN, fans took notice of a seagull flying in the air. The feeling towards this was latched onto so much that quite a few fans have pointed towards fan games such as Sonic Utopia to prove it could be done and demand that the game to be delayed so that such a system could be implimented. Explanation On the day that the IGN First gameplay trailer was released, popular Sonic YouTube creator Sam Procrastinates made a video stating his feelings about the video, latching on heavily to the lack of momentum-based physics, which hadn't been used in the franchise since Sonic Unleashed (and to a lesser extent Sonic Generations). One Twitter user in particular made a "Loss.jpg" meme mocking them.

Explanation The rails haphazardly placed in the air for Sonic to grind on have collectively become prime ground for mockery due to how out of place they appear compared to any game in the series prior. Explanation Many fans have noticed that one of the mechanisms Sonic ( being a hedgehog) uses in the open world has a great resemblance to a hamster wheel, leading to numerous jokes and memes related to the resemblance.
Previous accusations of Sonic games "copying" Nintendo games probably doesn't help either. Funnily enough, this became a Discredited Meme almost instantly after it was established, due in part to people simply getting sick of certain fans calling any open-world game with a green field a "BOTW Clone". And indeed, comparisons to Breath of the Wild were instant. Explanation Open-world game, big green field, you know where that usually goes.
This has led to numerous fanarts of Amy as a ghost, usually wearing a white version of her usual outfit. Since we can't see her and the voice is ethereal, many fans have claimed that Amy is not only in the game, but also dead, functioning as a ghost similar to Tikal back in Sonic Adventure. Explanation The mysterious voice beckoning Sonic in the reveal trailer has been revealed to be Amy. Seeing as SAGE is the same acronym as the popular online fangame show, many jokes have been made by it. The Sonic Amateur Games Expo is the enemy!? Explanation A stated backstory for the game (before SEGA retracted it) describes that Eggman was using his newest AI system, "SAGE", to take over the mysterious new machinery. For extra fun, there's this homage to the original parody that was made following the first showcase of Frontiers' gameplay.

It helps that Sega has gained a reputation to hire professional fans thanks to projects like Sonic Mania and that the user that partially inspired the song had a video of Sonic running around a wide open world, both of which only fueled the jokes more. Shortly after the reveal trailer, which shows Sonic being placed in a realistic looking Wide-Open Sandbox, fans quickly started remarking jokingly that Sega had hired that man. SEGA HIRED THAT MAN! Explanation Back in 2019, one YouTube user made a parody song based off of Johnny River's "Secret Agent Man" riffing on fans' tendency to beg Nintendo to hire fans based on their projects (which often revolve around simply inserting a character in a wide open field).Another common name for it was the "Spin Cycle".
Before its name was officially revealed as the Cyloop, many called Sonic's new trail move the Paraloop due to the similarities in appearance and usage.
